Adelaide Strikers

The Strikers, who play at the Adelaide Oval have enjoyed moderate success over the years in the Big Bash. They’ve twice topped the Group Stages, though they didn’t win it either time, but did eventually go all the way in 2017-18, their first and only title to date.

They are an extremely competitive side and have become a force to be reckoned with over the past few years under Jason Gillespie, the former Australia Test pace bowler, who is considered one of the best coaches in world cricket.

But the biggest name at the franchise is Rashid Khan, the genius Afghan leg spinner who has made Adelaide his Australian home and is now going to enter his fifth season with the Strikers.

Adelaide Strikers best odds

After a few years of the leading cricket betting sites in India showing them plenty of respect, they’ve decided this Strikers side isn’t as dangerous as it used to be. In previous years they were second or third-favourites but this time round they’re all the way down in seventh in terms of the shortest odds, according to 10CRIC.

In other words, only the Renegades are bigger outsiders than them.

Still, any side with Rashid Khan, Alex Carey and Travis Head in their ranks deserves respect and if they can find a couple of batsmen prepared to take more risks and hit more boundaries, they could be very competitive.

Predicted Group Stage Finish: 4th

This year’s Adelaide Strikers betting predictions

Adelaide Strikers performance 2020-21

The Strikers were pretty fortunate to make the Playoffs at all. They tied on 28 points in fifth place with the Hurricanes, only going through on net run rate. They won seven and lost seven during the regular season.

But once they were in the Playoffs and up against the Heat, they went out at the first time of asking.

As was the story of their season, they simply didn’t score enough runs batting first and with no Rashid Khan (on international duty) around to save the day, the Heat chased their total pretty easily in the end.

Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey were very consistent throughout the season with the bat, both passing 400 runs for the season.

With the ball, Rashid Khan was his usual self in terms of wickets (16) and economy rate (6.87) but surprisingly, he wasn’t their top bowler.

Both veteran Peter Siddle (19) and the ever-improving Wes Agar (22) took more wickets than him.

Adelaide Strikers performance 2019-20

The Strikers put in a strong performance in the Group Stages last season, winning eight, losing five and like a lot of teams last campaign, having a no result in there, as well.

It meant they finished third in the table and had they won one more game, it would have been second instead and two attempts at making the final.

In the Knockout match against the Sydney Thunder- the winner had the right to play the Stars for a place in the final- they had a modest-looking 152 to chase but just couldn’t get over the line.

Star duo Alex Carey (28) and Travis Head (32) put them in a strong position but their middle and lower order fell apart, with just one player in the bottom six getting to double figures and they ended up losing by 8 runs, made all the worse by the fact that they were at home in that game.

With the bat Jonno Wells and Jake Weatherald both got past 400 runs for the season, while Rashid Khan and Peter Siddle each took 19 wickets at economy rates of just 7.15 and 7.18 respectively. Englishman Phil Salt also impressed with the bat with a sky-high strike rate of 164; he scored four fifties in 15 innings.

Adelaide Strikers facts

  • In the old version of the Big Bash, they were known as the Southern Redbacks.
  • Their blue kit is a result of their sponsorship deal with a brewery called West End.
  • Coach Jason Gillespie is the eighth-highest wicket-taker for Australia in Test matches, with 259 wickets in 71 matches.
  • Their top wicket-taker ever is Ben Laughlin with 60. Laughlin is also the overall highest wicket-taker in the Big Bash.
  • Only side along with the Hurricanes never to have finished bottom of the Group Stages.
  • Travis Head is the only Adelaide Strikers batsman to have reached 1000 runs for the franchise; he has 1051.

Captain: Travis Head

If Adelaide had had Head available for the majority of their campaigns, they would surely have performed far better than they have.

They may even have won another BBL title to go with the one they won under his captaincy in 2017-18.

But Head has often been called up to the Australia side in all three formats or worse still, as far as the Strikers are concerned, been called up by Australia and not played. Which means he hasn’t played for either country or his Big Bash team!

His BBL record is excellent. Ahead of the 2021-22 season, his 50 matches have produced 1349 runs at a strike rate of 133 and he was the first Strikers batsman to score a century in the BBL.

This time round he’s competing with Usman Khawaja for a spot in the Ashes; the Strikers will be praying he doesn’t get it and will be available to play for them. Let’s wait and see.

Key Player: Rashid Khan

This one is a no-brainer. Rashid Khan, who made our Top 5 greatest Big Bash players ever list, is already right up there as one of T20’s best-ever bowlers.

No wonder he was first pick in The Hundred draft, no wonder neither the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL nor the Strikers in the BBL want to let go of him. They keep asking him back year after year.

His spinning, fizzing, biting leg spin has tormented batsmen all over the world and his career economy rate (6.35)  is almost unheard of for this format. Many a match is won or lost based on how well the opposition deal with his four overs of spin.

This is his fourth season at the franchise so he knows it well and enjoys playing here. If there’s one criticism to be made of Khan is that he should score more runs for a player of his batting ability. He could yet become a proper all-rounder.

Game-changer: Alex Carey

Some players just have that extra little bit of class about them and Carey is certainly one of those.

Admittedly the last couple of years haven’t been great for him. He lost the ODI vice-captaincy to Pat Cummins, lost his place in the Australia T20 side to Matthew Wade and only played a couple of games for Delhi in the IPL.

But that’s even more reason to remind everyone what he’s all about. With good options at the top of the order, expect him to bat at three or four while he also has a big role to play with the gloves and as the team’s skipper, when called upon.

While Travis Head is away on international duty, he’ll lead the Strikers. There was speculation at the end of the 2019-20 season he might leave the Strikers but instead, he signed a new four-year deal.

Adelaide Strikers BBL 2021-22 analysis

Their bowling is superb with Khan, Wes Agar and Peter Siddle three of the most consistent batsmen in the competition. George Garton is a fine addition, too.

All three are wicket-takers and economical bowlers and that’s where their strength lies.

But even though bowling is arguably more important than batting when it comes to winning a T20 tournament, you always get the feeling that if it’s a high-scoring game and you need lots of big hits, they’re simply not up to it.

Should make the Playoffs but anything beyond that, will be a bonus.

A tick to represent the stregths of Adelaide Strikers

Strengths

Khan and Peter Siddle are completely different sorts of bowlers but they end up doing the same thing: they take lots of wickets and keep that economy rate down.

With two such great bowlers bowling four overs each, it means batsmen have to take chances against the other ones.

Wes Agar improved considerably last season and with him, they now have three really good bowlers who know their way round the Strikers’ set-up.

And now with George Garton, they have four class bowlers. The English left-arm bowler has a brilliant strike rate of 15.8 in T20s and can contribute with the bat, so he looks a really good signing.

Alex Carey and Travis Head (if available) make up one of the best top orders in the Big Bash. If those two fire at the same time, they’ll be very hard to beat.

An X to represent the weaknesses of Adelaide Strikers

Weaknesses

Middle-order. It’s weak. Year after year they fail to address the issue and neither recruit Australian nor overseas players to bolster those number 4-7 spots that lack quality.

Too often it’s left to Jonno Wells to steady the ship but he’s an accumulator rather than a hitter and is not the ideal man to post or help chase, a big total.

That means there’s too much pressure on the top order and if they fail, it’s often Game Over for the Strikers.
