Melbourne Renegades

Melbourne Renegades won the 2018-19 final against bitter rivals the Melbourne Stars. But this is the only title they ever won. Theirs has mostly been a story of disappointment over the years.

It’s hard to know where exactly it’s gone wrong but they haven’t always recruited well in terms of overseas stars and have failed to capture consistent performers from among Australian players.

Proof of their struggles is that since winning that 2018-19 title against all odds, they finished rock bottom in the next two seasons.

According to the best Big Bash betting sites, this will be another year of struggle for them.

Melbourne Renegades Best Odds

From the perspective of the available live cricket satta rates, the Renegades are outsiders in this year’s BBL. The best odds for Melbourne Renegades to win the Big Bash League this year are 12.0 at Betway. It’s a good reflection of how hard they’ve found life in the BBL over the years, their performance last season and a distinct lack of overall quality in their side.

And as we’re about to see, they have serious injury problems to contend with, which will make life even harder for them. Check out our review of Betway to find out more about this Indian betting site.

Melbourne Renegades betting predictions 2021-22

You will find top betting advice for today’s cricket match that the Melbourne Renegades are playing. You’ll even find some other useful betting tips for the Renegades too!

Melbourne Renegades Performance 2020-21

Last place, just four wins from 14 games and just 16 points. Another dreadful season for the Renegades. For a change, their two star men with the bat – Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh- were actually available for the vast majority of the campaign so that can’t have been an excuse for their weak showing.

But neither of those was particularly good and their experiment of fielding a total of six overseas players at one stage or another didn’t bring rewards, either.

Too often they were stepping off a plane and diving into the action without the ideal preparation. Pakistan spinner Imad Wasim was the best of a bad bunch, taking 10 wickets in 10 games and going at just 7.15 an over.

With the ball they were too expensive and with the bat they didn’t score quickly enough, or the set batsmen got out at just the wrong time.

Melbourne Renegades Performance 2019-20

Proof of the fact that their 2018-19 victory may have been a big fluke is the fact that the next season they finished rock bottom, a more familiar place for them to end up.

They won just three matches all season out of 14, including two comprehensive losses against city rivals the Melbourne Stars.

Their cause wasn’t helped by the fact that their most important batsman in Aaron Finch and best bowler in Kane Richardson missed almost half their matches on international duty.

But that’s still no excuse and quite simply, with a few exceptions like Shaun Marsh (449 runs) and Mohammad Nabi, the latter making contributions with both bat and ball in his six appearances, no-one else really played as well as they could.

Dan Christian, so crucial in that win the previous season, was particularly poor, averaging just 12.8 with the bat and going at nearly 10 an over with the ball.

  • Between 2013-14 and 2017-18 went four years without making the Playoffs.

  • Their game against the Stars in BBL5 at the MCG had the largest attendance ever for a domestic cricket game, with 80,883 fans in attendance.

Melbourne Renegades 2021-22 players

Cameron Boyce, Zak Evans, Aaron Finch, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Mackenzie Harvey, Josh Lalor, Shaun Marsh, James Pattinson, Mitch Perry, Jack Prestwidge, Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland, Nic Maddinson (c), Reece Topley, Unmukt Chand, Mohammad Nabi, Zahir Khan

Captain: Nic Maddinson

Maddinson was a bit of a surprise recruit from the Stars in the off-season. After all, using just last season as an example, he played nine matches for the Stars and returned a top score of just 48.

And he’d hardly impressed in the seasons before that. In fact, his T20 career stats suggest he’s no star in this format with just 10 fifties in 123 games and a strike rate of 124.

But having signed him, the Renegades then went a step further and made him captain when Finch resigned the role.

He’ll probably bat at three and given his side’s recent history, will surely have his hands full.

But he’ll miss a couple of games at the start of the BBL campaign as he’ll be playing for Australia A.

Key Player: Aaron Finch

Australia’s current limited-overs captain has been at the Renegades since the very start and how well the Renegades have gone often has a lot to do with Finch’s performances.

The best news the Renegades could have got is that he’ll be available for the whole campaign because he doesn’t play Test cricket anymore and there aren’t white ball fixtures for Australia this year during the Big Bash.

Well not quite the whole campaign. He’s nursing an injury that he had throughout the whole of the recent T20 World Cup so will miss a few games as a result of that.

He gave up the captaincy after years in the job to focus on his batting and spend more time with his family.

Still a class act on his day who can get the team off to excellent starts. But the Renegades fans will be frustrated they haven’t seen the best of him for a few years.

Game-changer: Mohammad Nabi

It might be all-change everywhere else but at least Nabi is still there. Now 36, he was Afghanistan’s captain at the recent World Cup and his brand of accurate slow bowling and explosive middle-order hitting is just as good as it’s ever been.

If anything, the Renegades have been a bit guilty of under-using him a bit in the past in both disciplines. Few in the game can boast his experience and on occasion, he can hit sixes at will to ace tough run chases.

May even captain the side at the start in the absence of Finch and Maddinson.

Melbourne Renegades BBL 2021-22 analysis

In Finch, Marsh, Nabi, Kane Richardson and James Pattinson, they have a decent spine to the team and youngster McKenzie Harvey, plus overseas bowler Reece Topley, add a little bit of star quality.

But there are a fair few problems away from that. They have two proper class batsmen, but both of Finch and Marsh will be missing at the start of the campaign. Finch may only be away for a couple of games but Marsh will miss a fair few and those absences could cost them.

Nic Maddinson, another who will be absent for a couple of games due to Australia A commitments, looks a strange choice as skipper given his lack of captaincy experience and the fact he doesn’t have a great Big Bash record.

This could be another tough season for them.

A tick to represent the strengths of Melbourne Renegades

Strengths

They have a really strong opening partnership in Finch and Marsh, when available. It’s one of the best around on paper, though they don’t often both click at once. A new-ball pairing of Pattinson and Richardson is good, too.

So if they get both those aspects of the game right, they have the tools to win some games.

An X to represent the weaknesses of Melbourne Renegades

Weaknesses

They have issues with the captaincy, with injuries and the overseas players they’ve picked don’t look the best compared to some of the other teams.

The batting doesn’t look particularly storing or deep in the middle-order so if the top order doesn’t fire, they could be in trouble.
