Perth Scorchers

Perth Scorchers made the first two BBL finals, losing both, but came roaring back to win the next two tournaments. They then made it three BBL victories when winning again back in the 2016/17 season.

Having recruited so well in those early years, they then suffered as players left for various reasons.

Now, they are an unrecognisable side from that dominant one from a few years ago with lots of new faces to go with the likes of Mitch Marsh, Andrew Tye and Ashton Agar, who are still there from the old days.

After a couple of quiet seasons, they had a good one last time out, losing to the Sixers in the final.

The Sixers were, after all, the best side in the competition, so no disgrace there.  So, how does Big Bash betting place them for this year’s season? Let’s find out!

The Scorchers are second-favourites, sandwiched in between defending champions the Sixers and the Melbourne Stars. The Stars, it should be remembered, have never won the BBL.

It’s a fair price on the Scorchers, who look to have most bases covered. However, they’re likely to miss key man Jhye Richardson, who will either be on Test match stand-by or actually playing in the Ashes.

But can they go and win it without him?

Predicted Group Stage Finish: 2nd

This year’s Perth Scorchers betting predictions

Here, you will get Bet India’s cricket betting tips for each game that the Scorchers play over the 2021-22 BBL season. These include top tips, odds and sites to bet at!

Perth Scorchers Performance 2020-21

The Scorchers got off to a really poor start before regrouping and showing good consistency for the rest of the season. It helped that three different players passed 400 runs for the season- Josh Inglis, Colin Munro and Liam Livingstone- while Mitch Marsh and Jason Roy both got over 300 themselves.

Fast bowlers Jason Behrendoff and Andrew Tye both got lots of wickets but that was nothing compared to Jye Richardson, who took 29 in 17 games at an incredible strike rate of 12.7. Unsurprisingly, he was the BBL’s top wicket-taker last season.

Finishing second in the regular season, they didn’t make the final at the first time of asking. They lost to the Sixers in the Qualifier, who chased down their 167 with ease.

They did eventually make it to the final after beating the Heat in the Challenger. They posted 189 thanks to a brilliant 77 from Liam Livingstone.

Up against the Sixers in the final once again, they were given a target of 189 to chase.

That was after the Sixers’ English import James Vince scored his second 90-odd score against them in two matches.

They managed just 161, again thanks to another good effort from Livingstone (45), but it just wasn’t enough.

Perth Scorchers Performance 2019-20

The Scorchers had an indifferent season last time out, winning just six of 14 matches, ending in sixth place. One more win and they would have made the Playoffs, though.

But in truth, they never looked like a side equipped to actually go on to win it.  Star bowler Andrew Tye missed the whole season with injury and though overseas man Chris Jordan and new signing Fawad Ahmed each took 15 wickets (as did Jye Richardson), just about every bowler was going at almost 8.5 an over or more.

Skipper Mitch Marsh did his best with both bat and ball, having a strong season, and Liam Livingstone was typically aggressive, hitting four fifties in 14 games and boasting a season strike rate of 142. Josh Inglis was good with the bat as well, also hitting four fifties.

But two or three players were ‘passengers’ and they probably didn’t deserve any better than sixth place.

Perth Scorchers facts

  • Only one of two sides to have won three BBL titles. The Sixers are the other.
  • Made the final in their first four seasons.
  • Moved from the WACA to the Optus Stadium ahead of the 2018 season.
  • Coach is former Perth Scorchers and Australia batsman Adam Voges, also skipper the last time the Scorchers won the BBL.
  • Boast an 80% win rate against the Renegades, winning 10 out of 8 matches against them.
  • The only side with an overall winning record against them are the Brisbane Heat. The Scorchers have won just 45% of their games against them.
  • Both Mitch Marsh and Ashton Agar have brothers playing at different BBL teams. Shaun Marsh is at the Renegades, while Wes Agar is at the Strikers.

Perth Scorchers 2021-22 players

Ashton Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Peter Hatzoglou, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kelly, Mitch Marsh, Lance Morris, Kurtis Patterson, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, Colin Munro, Laurie Evans, Brydon Carse.

Captain: Mitch Marsh

The great news for Perth is that Marsh could well be available for the whole campaign. Right now, he’s not in the Ashes squad although of course that could change depending on team results, form and injuries.

If anything were to happen to Cameron Green, also a Perth Scorcher, he’d probably get a call-up to come in as the all-rounder, batting at six.  The Scorchers will be hoping not.

He was promoted to number three for Australia just before the T20 World Cup and was having a somewhat quiet tournament until the final.

Then he played one of the innings of his life with controlled aggression and was there at the end when the winning runs were scored. He was voted man-of-the-match.

But we’ll have to wait and see if that’s where he bats and we’ll also have to see how much he bowls.

Gets the captaincy back after giving it to Ashton Turner last year.

Key Player: Andrew Tye

A big reason the Scorchers were so dangerous a few years ago was because of the bowling of Andrew Tye. A death-overs specialist who bowls brilliant knuckle balls and slower balls, they suffered when over the last couple of seasons he was out of form or injured.

He lost his place and contract in the Western Australian side two years ago and didn’t feature in the IPL over the past couple of seasons. But he came back into form last season in the Big Bash, taking 21 wickets in 17 games. Somewhat rarely for him, he was fit and available the whole season.

He’s not so young anymore (34) but has bundles of BBL experience and his death bowling will be vital once again.

Game-changer: Colin Munro

Munro was dropped by New Zealand before the T20 World Cup after being given plenty of chances and not really taking them. At least that’s what the Selectors said. But he can feel a bit hard-done by. Very few players in the world can boast three international T20 centuries and there were a further 11 fifties in his 65 games.

His numbers at domestic level are just as impressive: four centuries and a remarkable 45 fifties from just over 300 games. Over the past decade he’s been one of the most prolific top-order batsmen in the format and has played in the Bash plenty over the years.

A strike rate of 140 in T20s suggests that any runs he’s going to get, he’s going to get them quickly.

Perth Scorchers BBL 2021-22 analysis

If there wasn’t that real possibility of losing Richardson for so much of the campaign, they may well have been considered the team to beat. Then again, we’ll have to wait and see how many games he is available for before assuming he’ll miss the whole, or most, of the BBL.

But still. They have other options in the pace department and two good spin options in seasoned campaigner Ashton Agar and new recruit Peter Hatzoglou. And their batting is good, especially now that Marsh is back to his best.

It’s not as good as it was last year but then again, last time out they had too many openers batting in the middle-order. A place in the final should be very achievable once again. Or better.

A tick to represent the strengths of Perth Scorchers

Strengths

A Top 4 of Munro, Inglis, Evans and Marsh is very good indeed. If they can avoid Australia Ashes call-ups to Inglis and Marsh and can play those four all season, they’ll be just fine.

Lots to like in the fast bowler department. Even without Richardson, there’s Tye, Jason Behrendoff, Matthew Kelly and English import Brydon Carse.

Though admittedly, Carse’s T20 numbers aren’t spectacular.

Peter Hatzoglou was one of the few success stories at the Renegades last season and the big leg-spinner looks a good addition to bowl in tandem with Ashton Agar.

An X to represent the weaknesses of Perth Scorchers

Weaknesses

The possibility of losing Richardson, Inglis and Marsh to Australia duty looms large.

Losing two would be a big blow, losing all three would be disastrous. Not just because of their quality to the team but also because of the need to readjust.

As has been the case in previous seasons, Ashton Agar at seven looks a place too high in the batting order.
