Sydney Sixers

Sydney Sixers, who play their home games at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), are one of only two sides to have won the Big Bash more than once. In fact, alongside the Perth Scorchers, they’ve actually won it three times.

They won the BBL in its first-ever edition and then went and won it in the last two editions, the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons.

They were also losing finalists on two occasions and have made the Playoffs in seven of the ten seasons, making them one of the most consistent BBL teams ever.

This year’s Big Bash betting sites have them as strong favourites once again.

This year’s Sydney Sixers betting predictions

Here, you’ll find top predictions from our cricket experts for all of the Sydney Sixers games in BBL 2021-22. Every single match that the Sixers play in will be analysed and reviewed right here.

Sydney Sixers Performance 2020-21

Their win in 2020-21 may just be the most impressive performance ever by a team in the history of the Big Bash. They won an impressive nine matches out of 14 in the Group Stages to top the Group and qualified for the final at the first time of asking.

They chased the Scorchers’ 168 with minimum of fuss in the Qualifier, mostly thanks to an unbeaten 98 from James Vince. They met the Scorchers in the final once again, and this time they batted first, posting 188.

Once again, it was Englishman James Vince doing the damage with 95 off 60. In reply, the Scorchers were never really in the hunt and managed just 161 after their 20 overs.

Opening batsman and wicket-keeper Josh Philippe was voted Player of the Tournament after finishing as the second-highest runscorer behind Alex Hales.

New signing Dan Christian, who was extremely impressive all season with both bat and ball, won his third Big Bash title after also having won it with the Brisbane Heat and the Melbourne Renegades.

Sydney Sixers Performance 2019-20

The only reason why their season last time out wasn’t perfect was that they ‘only’ finished second in the Group Stages. 14 Group Stage matches yielded nine wins, four defeats and a ‘no result’.

They finished just one point off the Melbourne Stars in second place but certainly made the most of their Top 2 finish.

They won the Qualifier in a low-scoring game in Melbourne, posting a modest total and defending it with surprising ease as the Stars, not for the first time, made a mess of the chase.

The Sixers’ bowlers were excellent on the night with Steve O’Keefe, Sean Abbott and Josh Hazlewood all taking wickets and being economical; in the end O’Keefe was man of the match.

The final, against the Stars again, was a similar story. In a game reduced to just 12 over per side because of rain, they posted a healthy 116-5 mostly thanks to Josh Philippe’s aggressive 52 off 29. Again, their bowlers were good in defending.

Philippe was the find of the tournament last time out, scoring 487 runs over the course of the season. Englishman Tom Curran was their top wicket-taker with 22.

Sydney Sixers facts

  • Won the now-defunct Champions League in 2012.
  • Three of Australia’s four first-choice Test bowlers play for the Sixers: Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon.
  • Sean Abbott is the second-highest wicket-taker in the history of the Big Bash with 106 and has every chance of overtaking Ben Laughlin, who has 111.
  • Have a 81% win rate against the Brisbane Heat.
  • Only ever passed 200 once in their history, scoring 205 against the Renegades in December 2020.
  • The Sixers’ top run-scorer ever is former captain Moises Henriques, with 1986 runs in 54 innings.
  • No Sixers’ batsman has ever scored a century in the Big Bash. James Vince’s two scores in the 90s in the BBL 2020-21 season mean he has the first (98) and third highest (95) scores for them.

Sydney Sixers 2021-22 players

Sean Abbott, Jackson Bird, Carlos Brathwaite, Dan Christian, Tom Curran, Ben Dwarshuis, Jack Edwards, Mickey Edwards, Moises Henriques (c), Daniel Hughes, Hayden Kerr, Nathan Lyon, Ben Manenti, Josh Philippe, Lloyd Pope, Jordan Silk, James Vince, Steve O’Keefe.

Captain: Moises Henriques

Henriques is an ideal captain for the Big Bash. He knows the league and all the players inside out, has played dozens of matches himself and is a wise and unfussy captain.

Interestingly, last season he missed a few of the early matches and was replaced by Daniel Hughes as skipper. Once Henriques came back, he decided to let Hughes finish the job. And he did of course, winning the BBL.

But it’s back to Henriques, also the franchise’s record runscorer, being in charge this year.

A decent fielder and an occasional bowler with his accurate medium pace, they’ll be better off for having him available for the full season.

Key Player: Sean Abbott

One of our Top 5 Big Bash legends, Abbott is a bit like Henriques: keeps it simple, does his job, performs year after year.

He’s the second-highest wicket-taker in BBL history, proof of his consistency and durability.

With the highest wicket-taker Ben Laughlin hardly playing at all these days, Abbott could well overtake him (he’s just five wickets away) after three or four games this campaign.

Unlike in previous seasons, there’s little or no chance of him being called up to the Test squad so they should have him available for the whole campaign.

Game Changer: Josh Philippe

Philippe impressed last season as an aggressive opening batsman who also keeps wicket and the general perception is that this is Australia’s future wicket-keeper batsman we’re talking about here.

When Alex Carey has had his lot, Philippe is his natural successor.

A tall batsman who loves to cut, pull and drive, like most keepers, he will have benefited hugely from a season in the IPL in 2020 for RCB, where he played alongside the likes of AB de Villiers.

Last season he ended up as the second-highest runscorer in the BBL and though he missed out there by a few runs, he was still voted Player of the Tournament.

Didn’t feature in the IPL in 2021 and wasn’t part of Australia’s World Cup-winning squad, so he’s been a bit quiet of late.

But this is a big chance to remind everyone what he’s all about.

Sydney Sixers BBL 2021-22 analysis

The very best T20 sides aren’t necessarily the ones with the biggest superstars or the biggest six-hitters. They’re the ones where from 1 to 11, everyone knows their role to perfection and they all do just that: their jobs.

You’ll do well to find a side as well-drilled as this one and where everyone knows what’s expected of them. They’ve also shown what a smart and professional outfit they are by doing their overseas recruitment early.

Rather than leaving it to the last minute, all of James Vince, Carlos Brathwaite and Tom Curarn were secured on deals for the whole season, rather than constant chopping and changing as overseas players come in and out.

A bit like the Mumbai Indians, they believe that stability is key so players like Abbott, Hughes, Henriques and O’Keefe have been there for a long time.

They will be just as strong as ever this campaign.

A tick to represent the strengths of Sydney Sixers

Strengths

During the regular season, they’ll be able to field Abbott, O’Keefe, Dwarshuis, Pope and Brathwaite and may also be able to play Starc and Lyon during the Playoffs.

That’s as good a bowling line-up as any in the tournament and you never get any respite against them because it’s just one good bowler after another coming at you.

In most games, they’ll bat Henriques, Christian and Brathwaite at 5, 6 and 7 and that’s some serious power right there. Not to mention, no shortage of experience.

In Vince and Philippe they also have a perfect combination of fast-scoring (Philippe) and accumulation (Vince) at the top of the order, to form one of the best opening partnerships.

An X to represent the weaknesses of Sydney Sixers

Weaknesses

The only slight concern may be in the spin department. O’Keefe is now 36, Ben Manenti is more of a containing bowler than an attacking one and Lloyd Pope is a bit inconsistent, which is why he hasn’t featured so much since making his debut.

They certainly don’t have a Rashid Khan or Mujeeb who can turn a game on its head with spin and on certain wickets, that could hurt them.
