Hayden Walsh Jr to be CPL Top Bowler @ 19.0 with Betway

The fact that Hayden Walsh is 19.0 to be the competition’s top wicket-taker is really surprising and I’m about to tell you why. This is the man who is currently the West Indies’ first-choice spinner in T20Is and who is fresh from an excellent Series against Australia a few weeks ago.

His 12 wickets in five matches were four more than anyone else from either side.

A T20 career strike rate of 19 suggests he’ll take almost 1.5 wickets per T20 game played at domestic level, and he’s no stranger to shining in the CPL. In 2019 his 22 wickets for the tournament, which Barbados won, earned him not only the honour of being CPL top bowler but also Player of the Tournament.

So you can see why we like those odds of 19.0 so much.

The likes of 10CRIC, Betway, Pure Win, Casumo and Bollybet are offering CPL betting on pre-tournament markets including the winner market, where some will fancy the Royals as true contenders to repeat their 2014 and 2019 successes.

All of those betting sites also offering odds on all of Barbados’ individual matches during the 2021 edition of the CPL, including the chance to bet on their T20 top batsman, top bowler and who might be the man-of-the-match.

Historic performances in the CPL

With two wins and a further runner-up spot in the CPL, the Royals are the second-most successful team in the tournament’s history, after the Trinbago Knight Riders.

They won the second edition in 2014 thanks to a tight defence of a Duckworth-Lewis Stern adjusted target against the Guyana Amazon Warriors, who fell eight runs short in the end.  The now-retired Dwayne Smith hit 59 off 52 and Shoaib Malik, now of Guayana, struck 55 off 42 which was followed by a good bowling display where Jason Holder took 2-18 to squeeze their opponents in the chase.

They then went and won it again in 2019, beating a Guyana side who had gone through the whole tournament unbeaten. A decent start from Jonson Charles and an explosive 50 off 27 from Jonathan Carter got the Royals to a very competitive score of 171/6.

Raymon Reifer and Ashley Nurse then bowled particularly well in defending their total with ease. They also lost the 2015 final to Trinbago by 20 runs, batting second.  The leading cricket betting sites in India know that they have been pretty reliable throughout the years though. Hence the odds are in their favour.

Crown to represent the Captain of the Barbados Tridents

Captain: Jason Holder

Jason Holder is one hell of a cricketer. He may have lost the captaincy he once had across all formats for the Windies with team results not so great under him, but they weren’t really his fault.

He’s a genuine all-rounder, meaning he’d get into most teams both as a batsman and as a bowler. He’s also one of the world’s best slip fielders.

The nice thing about his bowling is that he can bowl at any time and often generates extra bounce due to his height: 2.01m.

With the bat he can play patient and sensible innings or swing for the rooftops, when necessary.

And he’s  an experienced, calm and composed captain who knows this league very well.

Trophy to represent the Gun player for the Barbados Tridents in the CPL

Key Player: Hayden Walsh

When playing in the Caribbean, you’re not going to win much without a world-class spinner. So the Royals will be thankful that they have in Walsh the Windies main spinner of white-ball cricket.

He only made his debut for the West Indies T20I and ODI teams just over two years ago but has very much made the best of his chances since.

He averages exactly one wicket per game in T20Is at the time of writing and his record is even better in domestic cricket, where he takes a wicket every 14 balls.

He’s not bad with the bat either and even has a couple of domestic fifties to his name.

He was player of the tournament in 2019, the last time they won it, proof of his consistency over a full season.

Medal to represent the game changer for the Barbados Tridents in the CPL

Game-Change: Mohammad Amir

Azam Khan may well have his name in this section this time next year but right now he’s a player with huge potential, rather than a top-class performer.

Which fellow Pakistani Mohammad Amir is, and has been, ever since making his debut as a precocious teenager.

Yes, we all know the mistakes he’s made over the years and we know he’s not an easy player to manage.

But that’s geniuses for you. And with that incredible ability to swing the ball and mix up his pace, line and length, he’s one of the great left-arm quicks in the Wasim Akram mould.

Just how well he bowls at the start and the death will have a huge impact on their ability to win games.
