Imran Tahir to be CPL Top Bowler @ 8.5 with Betway

On low, slow, turning pitches in St Kitts, what you really want as a team is to have a leg-spinner who bowls attacking lines and takes a load of wickets. Even better if he’s experienced in general and even better if he’s experienced in the CPL.

Ticking every box just mentioned is 42-year-old Imran Tahir. Now in his fourth season at Guyana, this is a man with 407 wickets in 323 T20 games at domestic level, with a strike rate of 16.91, meaning he takes almost 1.5 wickets per game.

He took the third most wickets last year (15), was second in 2019 (16) and third in 2018 (16), all proof of his incredible consistency. A couple of seasons ago he was also the top-wicket taker in the whole of the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings. He’ll be licking his lips at the thought of bowling at Warner Park.

All of 10CRIC, Betway, Pure Win, Casumo and Bollybet are offering CPL betting odds on pre-tournament markets such as the winner market, where Guyana feature heavily. All of those betting sites are also offering odds on all of Guyana’s individual matches during the 2021 edition of the CPL.

Historic performances in the CPL

If you were to choose one phrase to sum up Guyana, it would be: ‘Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

It’s unlikely there is another side in world cricket anywhere that has made five finals of a major T20 competition and lost the lot! As you can imagine, cricket betting online can be a tricky business if you’re looking to bet on them to win!

On the one hand, it shows just how consistent they are in making the final so many times. Just for the record, they’ve done so in five out of the eight editions. Not even four-time winners Trinbago Knight Riders have managed that.

But on the other hand, it shows they have struggled to handle the pressure of the big occasion. They made the final in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019 and in all five of those games, they weren’t just beaten. They were soundly beaten.

For example, in 2013 they lost by seven wickets to Jamaica. Again, in 2016 they lost to Jamaica, this time by nine wickets. Worse still, having gone through the whole of the 2019 season unbeaten until they got to the final, they lost that to Barbados Tridents by 27 runs, a considerable margin in T20 cricket.

Crown to represent the Captain of the Guyana Amazon Warriors

Captain: Nicholas Pooran

To say that much is expected of Pooran, is putting it mildly. He’s only played 67 times for his country at the time of writing across T20Is and ODIs (he’s never played a Test) and only has one international century.

But that hasn’t stopped the likes of Yorkshire, the Mumbai Indians, the Punjab Kings, the Multan Sultans, the Sydney Sixers and the Melbourne Stars, among others, from signing him up.

Primarily, he’s a hard-hitting middle-order batsman who strikes at a mammoth 142 in domestic T20 cricket and has hit 16 fifties in 181 matches.

But he’s also a very capable wicket-keeper and often takes the gloves if the likes of Shai Hope and Andre Fletcher aren’t playing for the Windies.

Thirdly, he’s obviously seen as captaincy material, too. Not only did he take over from Chris Green as skipper for Guyana, but he was captain for the Windies against Australia in Kieron Pollard’s absence in the summer of 2021.

Trophy to represent the Gun player for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL

Key Player: Imran Tahir

Imtan Tahir has played for 26 different teams throughout his career. Sure, part of that is because there doesn’t seem to be a single T20 tournament he doesn’t sign up for, even more so now that he’s retired from ODIs for the Windies. For the record, he’s not actually retired from T20Is for the Proteas, he’s just stopped being picked.

The other reason is that Tahir is now 42 years old. Few players can match Tahir’s experience, which includes 165 appearances across all three formats for his country.

The sight of Tahir celebrating yet another wicket like a striker scoring the winning goal in a football match is one of cricket’s iconic images.

More to the point, his vicious leg spin has claimed 398 T20 victims at domestic level and his four overs often define the course of the match. He’s played plenty for Guyana over the years so knows his role well.

Medal to represent the game changer for the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL

Game-Change: Shimron Hetmyer

Pakistan duo Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez are unlucky to miss out here because both can win the game with the bat, and also contribute with the ball.

But Hetmyer is the one most likely to turn a game on its head. He strikes at 131 in domestic T20 cricket and few players are as fearless and brutal as Hetmyer on his day.

When well set, he’s the sort of player who can hit just about every other ball for a boundary and it almost doesn’t matter where you bowl, he’ll find a way of putting it away.

But there’s a reason why he’s not spoken of in the same breath as a Kieron Pollard or AB de Villiers: a lack of consistency. Not only does Hetmyer have a bit of a bad habit of getting out to loose shots but his fitness levels aren’t always the best.

The flip side is, he’s unstoppable when it clicks.

Guyana Amazon Warriors FAQs

None. They made the final in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019 but lost each of those five finals.

Ahead of the 2021 season, West Indies limited-overs vice-captain Nicholas Pooran took over from Australian spinner Chris Green as skipper, after Green didn’t return for a fourth year at the CPL franchise.

It’s at Providence, in Guayana. It has a capacity of 15,000 people and is renowned for being a spinner’s paradise. But like all CPL teams in 2021 bar Saint Kitts and Nevis, they won’t play any home games this season as all matches are played there.

Johan Botha. The former South African off-spinner, who played 123 times for South Africa across all three formats, has been their coach since 2018.
