Australia Performance at the 2016 T20 World Cup
2016 was yet another year of disappointment for Australia at a World Cup. They had a good-looking batting line-up with Shane Watson, David Warner, Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell providing plenty of power and experience.
But their bowling always looked a bit suspect with their best bowlers like Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins absent and in the end that’s what cost them. The batsmen just about did their bit but the bowlers just couldn’t win any games on their own.
They were up against it in the Group Stages after losing to New Zealand in their first match but bounced back to beat Pakistan and Bangladesh.
In their final Group match they needed to beat hosts India to progress and batted first. They wasted a good start to post a somewhat competitive 160 and were in the game after a couple of early wickets. But a big partnership from Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni put an end to all that as India won comfortably in the end. Australia were out.
Australia since 2016
The famous ‘Sandpapergate affair’ of 2018 saw Steve Smith sacked as captain in all formats including the T20 one so from 2018 onwards it’s been Aaron Finch who’s been in charge of the side. Suspensions to Smith and David Warner as a result of the scandal robbed them of two of their best players for a year but both have since returned, albeit with limited success.
Over the last four years, they’ve played 40 T20 matches, winning 22, losing 16 and having two no results in there. They’ve been good at home, winning 10 of their 16 matches on Australian soil and crucially, have been good in India, as well. Over the past four years they’ve played 10 times out in India and won five of them, losing four, with a no result.
This is the first time that Australia can take their star fast-bowling trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to a T20 World Cup after all three missed out last time.

Captain: Aaron Finch
Finch was the obvious choice to be appointed skipper when Steve Smith was sacked as captain and suspended for a year. This is a player with an outstanding record in T20s at both domestic and international level as a batsman who had also had lots of experience as skipper of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash.
But it’s not all rosy right now for Finch. He’s had a poor year with the bat during 2020 and 2021 both in the IPL and the Big Bash and hasn’t even got many runs for Australia, either. You’d think that if he didn’t skipper the team, he’d probably have been dropped by now.
So the next few months will be crucial for Finch to find some form from somewhere, a task made harder by the fact that he doesn’t have an IPL contract his time round. Lots for the burly opener to think about.
Key Player: Mitchell Starc
There’s a good reason for this selection. Starc was the (joint) top wicket-taker at the 2015 World Cup and the (sole) top wicket-taker at the 2019 World Cup. Admittedly those were ODI World Cups and this is T20, but it does show you what Starc can do at the biggest ICC events.
There are few sights more exciting than this giant left-arm fast bowler charging into the crease and honing in on those stumps; early wickets from him will help Australia’s cause, no end.
But it’s not all good as regards Starc. He hasn’t played much IPL over the years because of injury and other reasons and his injury record is poor at the best of times, so the first step is to actually just make sure he’s fit and on the plane to India. Boy, do they need him.
Game-changer: Marcus Stoinis
Another obvious candidate here would be Stoinis’ BBL skipper at the Melbourne Stars, Glenn Maxwell.
But over the last year or so Stoinis has emerged as the more likely man to really turn a game on its head. He had a strong season for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL last year with two or three outstanding knocks with the bat while Maxwell had an awful season at the Punjab Kings and Stoinis has put in some good performances for Australia in this format, too.
One of those was a quite brilliant 78 off 37 against New Zealand in February 2021. Chasing a mammoth target, Stoinis came to the crease at number five and smashed boundary after boundary as he almost pulled off the most unlikely of victories. In the end he didn’t, but it was a reminder of the power and star quality of the man.
Australia World T2 2022 analysis
It’s easy to pick out names like Warner, Starc, Maxwell, Smith, Cummins and Stoinis and assume Australia have a great chance here.
But that may be way off the mark. Teams like India, England and the West Indies all look to have better players in all positions, more options in the squad and above all, a better pedigree in this competition.
Lots of Australian players have lots of valuable IPL experience. However, so do players from lots of other teams, so that’s no big bonus for them.
Perhaps the biggest issue of all is that Australia don’t know who their best XI is, so there are few game plans and strategies that have consistently worked well with the same group of players, simply because they keep chopping and changing.
All in all, there aren’t many reasons to think Australia are genuine contenders.

- India, Pakistan and the West Indies have spinners who are more dangerous than Zampa.
- It would be a huge mistake if they play Steve Smith, far from being a T20 specialist.
- The form of captain Aaron Finch with the bat is a big concern.
