West Indies World T20 best odds
The West Indies are available at best odds of 10.0 with 10CRIC. This makes them fourth favourites for the title after India, Australia and England. That’s just a bit shorter than the likes of New Zealand and South Africa.
The Windies best odds of 10.0 is a perfectly good price and one we’d advise you to take before it shortens. This is a side packed with T20 specialists who know Indian conditions well with so many playing in the IPL year after year and who are, after all, the only double World Champions in this format. They should be shorter in the betting than they are.

West Indies Performance at the 2016 T20 World Cup
They won it! In doing so they became the first side to win more than one World T20 Cup after they’d also won it back in 2012.
It was a brilliant West Indies performance we witnessed at the last World Cup where they beat the two other best sides in the competition in back to back matches; first India in the semi and then England in the final.
Before that they had topped a group that had England and South Africa that included a superb win over England in a high chase where Chris Gayle got 100. What followed were two absolute classics.
In the semi, India set the Windies 193 to win, a monster total that looked near on impossible when the Windies lost early wickets. But Lendl Simmons, playing his first game of the tournament, scored a brilliant unbeaten 82 off 51 after riding his luck with a series of dropped catches and wickets off no balls. A fast 43 off 20 from Andre Russell then got Darren Sammy’s side close to the line and eventually over it to seal a fantastic chase under the utmost pressure.
Performance in the Final
In the World T20 final, the West Indies again bowled first and restricted England to just 151-9. What should have been a straightforward chase turned to be anything but that after they lost Gayle and Johnson Charles in the first over.
But then came Marlon Samuels. The gifted but moody Number 4 hit a superb 85 off 66, including two sixes, and the Windies chased down the total with just two balls to spare. But not before one of the most iconic moments T20 cricket has ever seen.
Needing 19 off the last six balls of the match, relative newcomer Carlos Brathwaite was facing Ben Stokes and went six, six, six and six to finish the match in style. A wonderful cameo from Brathwaite but the real hero was of course Samuels.
West Indies Since 2016
Captain Darren Sammy retired from international cricket shortly after with Carlos Brathwaite taking over, before he himself was then replaced as skipper by Kieron Pollard in late 2019.
Samuels didn’t play for them much after that, either. Both are now fully retired. Spinners Sulieman Benn and Samuel Badree haven’t played for the Windies much either and are now also out of the picture.
Chris Gayle has played for the Windies on and off since that famous win in Kolkata and after a good IPL last season, may be hoping for one last go at winning yet another title.
Young West Indies batsmen Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran have since emerged as T20 superstars and they’ll need them both at their best in India.
West Indies facts
Here are some cool facts about the West Indies and their performances at the T20 World Cup.
- The Windies made two World T20 finals and won them both (2012 and 2016).
- Chris Gayle scored a century in the first-ever World T20 in 2007 and another in the last edition in 2016. He’s the only player with two T20 World Cup centuries.
- Despite winning two titles, the Windies’ win percentage at the World T20 is just the fourth best at 58% with India and Sri Lanka boasting a 68% win rate.
- Marlon Samuels was man of the match in both the 2012 and 2016 finals but he’s since retired.
- Skipper Kieron Pollard is the Windies’ most capped player in T20Is with 76 games. Dwayne Bravo has 71 appearances but isn’t certain to be picked this time round.
- The Windies had a poor tournament the one time they hosted it, crashing out in the second Group Stage in 2010.

Standby players:
Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Sheldon Cottrell and Darren Bravo
Captain: Kieron Pollard
It was a bit of a surprise when Pollard was announced as their new T20 captain in late 2019 because of a certain lack of captaincy experience. But there was no lacking general experience. With 531 T20 appearances under his belt, no one has played more games in this format than Pollard, and by a margin of 60 games.
Pollard is a pretty uncomplicated skipper who doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel and as ever, his number one task will be to have a motivated, united group of players playing with a smile on their faces, which is the big thing that former skipper Darren Sammy managed to do. These guys are talented enough, they just need to pull in the same direction.
The Trinidadian also has a huge role to play with bat in hand at number five or six and his fielding is exceptional, but don’t expect to see him bowl too much in India.
Key Player: Roston Chase
Up until this year’s CPL, Chase was generally seen as a Test match player. An accurate off-spin bowler who could get through a lot of work on turning pitches and who could do a very solid job with the bat.
After all, he has a sound technique, good temperament and plays some nice-looking shots. But what this year’s CPL taught us is that he may actually be turning into a T20 superstar. He topped the run charts for the whole tournament with 446 at an average of almost 50, including four fifties. And all this from number four.
It’s virtually unheard of for a batsman who isn’t an opener to top score in a tournament like the CPL. His 35 fours were more than anyone else and only Evin Lewis and Nicholas Pooran smashed more sixes than his 24
He may just be given a go to play at four for the Windies. The openers will probably be Lewis and Lendl Simmons, while all of Kieron Pollard, Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer and Andre Russell are better suited to batting at five or lower.
He will of course also be expected to bowl, alongside first choice spinner Hayden Walsh. It will be essential in the UAE to have two bowlers bowling in tandem.
Game-changer: Andre Russell
The man, also known as Dre Russ or occasionally, Superman, is on his day the best T20 player in the world. No one else can do what he does on his day: bowl four menacing overs, hit 60 off 30, field superbly.
The problem with Russell however has been injuries. He’s played a lot of cricket over the past few years and his body is feeling the strain of his all-action style involving bowling quick and hitting monstrous sixes.
Very often he’s only batted or only been able to bowl a couple of overs a game. But even if that’s the case, it’s still worth playing him. They need to take him even if he’s not 100% fit, manage his workload and if necessary, just play him in the biggest games.
West Indies World T20 2021 analysis
The Windies are an excellent T20 side, always have been. That’s because the explosive natural ability of their players is perfectly suited to this format. For the batsmen, rather than playing longer, more measured innings, it’s all about boundaries and big shots. The bowlers in turn can focus on taking wickets rather than wearing batsmen down.
They are after all the most successful side in the World T20, they’re the defending champions, they have a strong man in charge of the side in Pollard and a good crop of players. It would be no surprise if they defended their title.
Strengths
- They won it in India five years ago
- Particularly strong when it comes to chasing targets
- Only England have as many power-hitters as them in their batting line-up
- Good spin options with Narine, Hayden Walsh and Roston Chase fine performers. Spin will be key in India
- Many West Indies players already know the condition in India. Pollard, Bravo, Russell, Narine, Cotrell, Gayle & Holder have all played in many IPLs
Weaknesses
- Russell’s injuries may give the captain and selectors some headaches
- Lots of good all-rounders but not great options in terms of out-and-out fast bowlers
- Generally good on high scoring wickets but can struggle on low-scoring, turning wickets where runs need to be accumulated rather than scored quickly
