Has Chennai Super Kings won the IPL before?
They sure have. They won it in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021.
Curiously, MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay and Dwayne Bravo were all part of the team on each of the first three occasions. Despite the big gap in years between the first win and the last win, it’s a testament to the continuity and loyalty among the playing staff.
When they won it in 2021, Murali Vijay was no longer pat of the squad but seasoned CSK veterans like Dhoni, Bravo, Raina (who admittedly didn’t play the final), Faf du Plessis and Ravindra Jadeja, certainly were.
It was also a first time win in the IPL for Englishman Moeen Ali after doing the rounds at a few other IPL sides, and also for Ruturaj Gaikwad. Both were retained and will have a chance to try to make it two IPL crowns for them this year.
They did however also lose finals in 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2019, which is a bit of a concern.
Their record in the IPL might have been even better had they not been suspended for the 2016 and 2017 editions.
CSK Performance 2021
2021 was a typical CSK performance in every regard.
They were excellent in the Group Stages, finishing in the Top 2 for the seventh time in 12 editions. That allowed them to go into the Qualifier knowing they had two bites of the cherry in terms of making the final.
They needed only one bite.
A win over table-toppers Delhi in the Qualifier after chasing 173 with just two balls to spare got them straight to the big match after Ruturaj Gaikwad led the charge with 70 off just 50 balls in the chase.
In the final they met a surprise package in KKR but were just too good once again.
Moeen Ali was superb with a quickfire 37 off 20 but it was the uber-experienced Faf du Plessis who did most of the hard work with a beautifully-measured 86 off 59 as CSK set Kolkata 193.
KKR started well enough but the net run rate was too high and as wickets fell, so their chances slipped away.
CSK displayed all the usual tricks. They batted down to nine and always had at least seven bowling options to hand.
Ruturaj Gaikwad ended as the IPL’s top runscorer for the season but Ali, Jadeja, Du Plessis and Deepak Chahar were also consistently good all campaign.
CSK performance 2020
2020 was not a good year for Chennai Super Kings. They were the first team to be eliminated from the race to the playoffs. Overall, they claimed only 6 wins during the entire tournament with 8 losses to overshadow this.
Last year marked the first-ever time that CSK did not qualify for the playoffs in the history of the IPL.
CSK performance 2019
In 2019, CSK finished as runners-up in the Group Stages to the Mumbai Indians. After losing to Mumbai in the Qualifier 1, they then beat the Delhi Capitals in the Qualifier 2 to book their place in yet another IPL final.
This time, things didn’t go their way.
Chasing 150, they were very much in the game all the way through with Shane Watson at the crease. But when he got out, the middle order struggled and needing two off the final ball with SN Thakur on strike, Lasith Malinga trapped him LBW, meaning the Super Kings lost by just one run.

Captain: MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni is sort of the Godfather of Indian cricket and no-one is more crucial and influential to Chennai Super Kings’ chances than MS himself. It’s as skipper that he arguably has the biggest role to play but his presence behind the stumps is of huge importance as well.
At 40, his match-winning cameos with the bat are a bit of a collectors’ item these days so his main goal will be to oversee the transition from the CSK of old to a new team who will carry on being extremely competitive, post the Mega Auction.
No-one in the world game can think on their feet in the tensest moments like Dhoni can and perhaps that’s his greatest skill of all.
Gun player: Ravi Jadeja
Jadeja is the sort of T20 player that every team wants to have. A genuine three-dimensional player, he can make meaningful contributions in all three disciplines.
If anything, it’s as a fielder that he’s at his absolute best but he’s an ace at the other two disciplines as well, just as capable of winning a match single-handedly with bat or ball. There were at least two matches last year when his death overs batting got CSK over the with line, so expect plenty more from him this time around.
Not only that but he’s a real Chennai stalwart and one that MS Dhoni trusts unconditionally. He’ll certainly always be the second name on the team sheet, after Dhoni himself.
In fact, after the 2021 season, he was actually the first name on the teamsheet. He was the first player they chose to retain, over Dhoni himself.
Promising youngster: Ruturaj Gaikwad
Gaikwad had to wait for his chance during the 2020 IPL season. CSK went with their tried and trusted opening partnership of Faf du Plessis and Shane Watson for most of it. With little success.
But after being eliminated at the Group Stages, they finally gave him a shot. His response? Three consecutive matches where he top-scored, three consecutive matches where he was man of the match. If only they’d played him earlier.
Thankfully for CSK, they played him for the whole of the 2021 season and he duly justified the faith.
He ended the season as the IPL’s top runscorer after a slowish start, scoring 635 runs. That included four fifties and his maiden IPL century, all at a strike rate of 136.
He was crucial in the Qualifier and was just a rock in their batting order all season. India haven’t given jim too many chances but CSK know perfectly well just how good he is.

No preview of Chennai Super Kings is complete without talking about how many times they’ve made the IPL final. It’s a truly remarkable record: nine finals in twelve seasons that they took part in.
Year after year they win matches from nowhere thanks to their never-ending batting line-up and with MS Dhoni calling the shots in the field, they can also defend totals under the utmost pressure thanks to some adventurous fields and risky bowling changes.
Because they have an ageing squad, they do tend to concede more runs in the field than most other sides but don’t let that put you off. Make no mistake about it: Mega Auction or no Mega Auction, they’ll be strong as ever.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is a strong selection. Last year he not only came good as CSK top batsman, he came good as the top batsman for the whole competition. With another year’s experience under his belt and with lots of faith shown in him by the CSK management, it would be no surprise if he’s top of the pile once again.
