If you’re starting a team from scratch, getting KL Rahul on board is one of the best places to start.
Rahul was IPL top run scorer in 2020 and third highest run scorer again in 2021 so at the very least, you can expect a mountain of runs from him at the top of the order.
He was in charge of a struggling side at Punjab for the last few years but did as good a job as could be expected with limited resources.
That he was given India’s vice-captaincy in both ODIs and T20Is over the past few months tells you how highly India regard him.
It will be interesting to see whether he decides to keep wicket as well, or hand over the gloves to Quinton de Kock.
Gun player: Marcus Stoinis
That Stoinis was their second pre-auction pick tells its own story.
High-class overseas all-rounders are always extremely sought-after and Stoinis is one of the best.
He’s rarely opened in the IPL, often batting at five, but the option to open with him is there if they want it.
But they’ll probably prefer to have him bat in the middle-order as a finisher, while relying on him to bowl a few overs as well, including at the death, if necessary.
He certainly has the pedigree and experience to play a big role for them.
Promising youngster: Ravi Bishnoi
Bishnoi was the third of the pre-auction picks.
After a couple of impressive seasons as a youngster at Punjab under Rahul, they decided to buy him and make him their frontline spinner.
Bowling right-arm leg break, Bishnoi was man-of-the-match on his India T20 debut against the West Indies and also impressed in games two and three, always being extremely economical.
They’ve shown a lot of faith in a 21-year old but he’s good enough to not let them down.
Lucknow Super Giants Team Analysis
Lucknow will have one of the best opening partnerships in the competition with the brilliant KL Rahul alongside Quinton de Kock, assuming that’s how they want to go about things.
And they’re certainly blessed with a trio of high-class IPL all-rounders with Stoinis, Jason Holder and Krunal Pandya all very capable with the bat and all three offering different styles of bowling.
Stoinis is accurate and has variations, Holder has extra bounce due to his height, while Pandya is a metronomic left arm spin bowler.
In Avesh Khan they have a man who took a load of IPL wickets in 2021 while Bishnoi is the next big thing in terms of Indian spinners.
But they look a bit light in the batting at 3-4, two crucial positions.
Hooda and Pandey haven’t been that good in the IPL over the past couple of years and they’ll need strong performances from them in order to not upset the balance of the team.
They also have the smallest squad of any so injuries could yet create a problem for them.
