Mumbai Indians best odds

The odds have the Mumbai Indians as the 5.5 favourites to win IPL 2022. They won two of the last three editions although they were, admittedly, pretty poor in 2021. They failed to make te Playoffs after going in as favourites once again.

They won’t have been too keen on the IPL changes that meant teams could only retain four players.

They would have felt that despite their disappointment in 2021, they had the best squad of anyone and would have liked to have kept the status quo rather han having to pretty much start from scratch, like everyone else.

Still, they did retain four very important players and those four will be tasked with overseeing the transition, alongside big money man Ishan Kishan, the most expensive purchase of any in the auction.

Mumbai best odds of 5.5 can be found at 10CRIC.

Has Mumbai Indians won the IPL before?

They’ve not only won it but have won it a record 5 times. They started off slowly, failing to get out of the Group Stages in each of the first two editions but started to show what they could do when finishing as runners-up in 2010.

They went one better in 2013 and once they got the taste for IPL glory, they started to make winning a habit, also triumphing in 2015, 2017 and 2019 and 2020.

Remarkably, they’ve won two of their last three IPL finals with a victory off the last ball, to win by one run. Against Pune in 2017 and Chennai Super Kings in 2019.

In 2019 they had Lasith Malinga to thank for getting them over the line…Chennai needed just one run to take it to a Super Over and two to win it. Malinga’s pinpoint yorker was just too good, trapping SN Thakur LBW and another IPL title was theirs.

Their victory in the 2020 IPL final was far more comfortable, though. They restricted Delhi Capitals to just 156/7 and chased it pretty comfortably, with eight balls to spare.

Mumbai Performance in 2021

Many felt Mumbai could do what no side had ever done before and win three titles in a row.

After all, they had pretty much the same team who had won the previous two editions so there were no reasons to think things would be different his time round.

But they just didn’t click.

With the bat Sky Yadav and Rohit Sharma did their bit but Quinton de Kock ended up being the only player to score two fifties all season.

And though his strike rate was always high, Kieron Pollard had a quiet season, as well. He got to fifty just once in 12 attempts.

Ishan Kishan, who had been excellent the previous campaign, was also out of form for most of the campaign.

They also suffered from Hardik Pandya not being able to bowl, so had less options with the ball in that regard.

Though Jasprit Bumrah and Rahul Chahar took wickets and were economical, the others weren’t always so good and only three players (Bumrah, Trent Boult and Chahar) passed the 10-wicket barrier for the season.

In the end they finished tied on 14 points with KKR and narrowly missed out on the Playoffs on net run rate, despite winning three of their last four games.

Mumbai performance in 2020

They won it, successfully defending their title and proving to everyone that they could also win the IPL in an even year (2020) after having won their four previous titles in odd years.

It was as flawless a performance as we’ve ever seen in any previous edition of the league.  They won an impressive nine matches out of 14 in the Group Stages and were imperious in the Playoffs.

First, they beat Delhi Capitals in the Qualifier 1, posting 200 thanks to fifties from Yadav and Kishan. Then they beat the Capitals again in the final after restricting DC to just 156/7 thanks to three wickets from man-of-the-match Trent Boult.

Ishan Kishan was their top runscorer with 516 runs, while Bumrah and Boult took 27 and 25 wickets respectively to end as the second and third-highest wicket-taker in the 2020 IPL.

A crown representing the captain at MI

Captain: Rohit Sharma

It’s highly unlikely that Mumbai would have won the five titles they did if they didn’t have Rohit Sharma on board. It’s some bonus to be able to count on a man who is arguably the best T20 opener in the world and a very calm-headed, experienced and tactically astute skipper as well.

For good measure, he’s also a cracking slip fielder. How any other IPL side would love to have Sharma. Scored a composed 68 off 51 in te 2021 final to make sure Mumbai didn’t wobble in the chase

Is now India’s captain in all three formats, proof of just how highly rated he is.

A trophy representing the gun player for MI

Gun player: Kieron Pollard

Fun fact: Kieron Pollard is the first player in history to have played 500 T20 matches.

Pollard is a curious case in that sometimes he doesn’t bowl at all and because he generally bats at five, six or seven, he sometimes doesn’t even bat or may just be around for five or six overs. But that’s missing the point: few players in the world game can score as quickly as the giant West Indian, who is especially punishing against spin bowling. No game is over while Pollard is still at the crease.

A medal representing the promising youngster at MI

Promising youngster: Ishan Kishan

If ever you wanted to know how a young player views batting in T20 cricket, just look at Kishan. A small man who doesn’t look particularly strong, he generates his power thanks to exquisite timing and strong wrists.

But it’s as much his intent as anything that makes him so dangerous. Aggressive by nature and not afraid to play the big shots from the word go, he’ll surely have a huge future with India as well. Can bat anywhere in the Top 4 though he’s likely to be used as an opener this season now that Quinton de Kock has gone.

Will also have extra responsibility now that he’ll be expected to keep wicket, as well, also taking over from de Kock in that regard.

Mumbai Indians Team analysis

Mumbai were smart and logical with their choices of retained players.

Sharma leads and opens, Pollard is their match winner in the middle order, Yadav the epitome of consistency and now an India regular, whereas Bumrah has been India’s best fast bowler across all formats for some time now.

Add Kishan to the equation, who at the price may just as well have been a retained player, and they have a solid foundation. All those five were part of their winning teams in 2020 and 2021.

So the batting looks fine and expect Bumrah to be his usual brilliant self but they’ll need to make sure they find a place for Daniel Sams in the team or else their fast bowling stocks will look a bit bare.

They may also need to play Tymal Mills, the English pace bowler who takes plenty of wickets, though he’d had little or no experience of the IPL in he past. But they’ll have to keep an eye on his fitness as he’s got a chequered past when it comes to injuries.

But the man they really want available is Jofra Archer. They paid big money for him (8 Crore) but know he’s unlikely to play in the 2022 edition so are investing for the future and hoping he’s available to play next campaign.

Mumbai will be dangerous but they don’t look quite the side from the last few years with de Kock, both Pandyas and Rahul Chahar now gone.

Mumbai Indians FAQs

Yes. As the most successful side in the history of the IPL and winners of two of the last three editions, it’s no surprise they’re the favourites to win.

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan are world-class opening batsmen with a solid track record in the IPL and who can go very close to winning the Orange Cap. The Indian captain and the left-handed youngster can play the big shots and score very quickly but also just rotate the strike and accumulate runs if necessary as well. They’re both decent wagers to be a top bat in this year’s Indian Premier League…

Given that they’re the favourites to win it, the odds on Mumbai finishing last are very big at 21. It’s unlikely they’ll finish bottom of the Group Stages, but the odds are very generous if that were to happen.

Yes! The Mumbai Indians have made six finals in 13 editions of the IPL. In four of those finals, they went on to win.
