Rajasthan Royals Betting

The Royals won the inaugural edition of the IPL.That was under the captaincy of the great Shane Warne, who we tragically lost in March 2022, gone far too young.

Leading a team made up of virtually unknown youngsters at the time, including Ravindra Jadeja and Yusuf Pathan, he and Rajasthan shocked the IPL after the Royals came into the competition as the big outsiders according to the best cricket betting sites.

But that’s as good as it got for the Royals, who were never able to replicate the magic from that early win.

They were suspended for two years alongside the Chennai Super Kings due to being guilty of match-fixing, missing the 2016 and 2017 editions.

But of the remaining 11 editions they were in (excluding the one they won), they only made the playoffs in three of them, finished rock bottom once and in seventh on four occasions.

Let’s see if they can improve this time.

Rajasthan Royals best odds

IPL odds with 10 CRIC put RR at 8.0 to win the IPL 2021 – making them the fifth favourites.

The bookies are clearly somewhat impressed with what they’ve seen so far from their business in the Mega Auction and feel that for the first time in years they’ve got a well-balanced squad and one that has moved away from just packing it with English overseas imports.

Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were expensive purchases in the past who missed a lot of IPL games through injury but Archer has moved on to Mumbai and Stokes won’t be playing any IPL at all this season.

If they can pick the right XI and make a good strat, then this will surely be their best performance in years, even if they don’t go on to win it.

Has Rajasthan Royals won the IPL before?

They won the first-ever edition of the competition in remarkable circumstances. Captained by Shane Warne and fielding young Indian players alongside cut-price overseas recruits, they won the Group Stages and weren’t done just yet.

They destroyed Delhi Capitals in the semis, eventually winning by 105 runs after posting a mammoth 192. Shane Watson, who had already contributed a handy 52 with the bat then went on to bowl beautifully, as well.

He took three wickets for just 10 runs and put in one of the best all-round performances ever seen in the IPL.

The final against Chennai Super Kings was an absolute classic. Chasing 164 to win, a knock of 56 from Yusuf Pathan kept them in the game and needing eight off the last over they flicked, nudged and ran their way to victory, getting the one run they needed off the final ball.

Watson was Player of the Series and skipper Warne had engineered an absolute miracle, given the scarce resources he had to play with.

RR Performance 2021

Having released Steve Smith at the end of 2020, they appointed Sanju Samson as skipper for 2021.

Their first match of the season was an absolute classic, almost chasing Punjab’s 218 thanks to an outstanding century from Samson.

But not only did they lose the match, they also lost Ben Stokes, who broke his hand while batting. That was the first and last match he played all season.

Chris Morris was the highest paid player in the 2021 auction but didn’t really perform as you’d expect, despite taking 15 wickets in 11 games. He was expensive with the ball and rarely contributed with the bat.

And no-one really got going with the bat, either.

Star batsman Jos Buttler opted not to return for the second half of the IPL in the UAE and Liam Livingstone failed to replicate his performances in the Big Bash and T20 Blast, not getting to grips with the wickets.

They finished seventh, with just five wins from 14 games.

RR performance 2020

Different season, same story. They started well enough with two wins from two but it was all the way downhill from there. Wins became more and more scarce, performances became more and more inconsistent.

In the end they managed just six wins from 14 matches and ended up rock bottom, thanks to an inferior net run rate in comparison to the Punjab Kings and Chennai.

Their skipper for 2021, Sanju Samson, ended up as their top runscorer; but 375 runs isn’t even that much. However, Jofra Archer managed to win the stats-based Player of the Tournament award, some achievement given how poor his side was.

RR performance 2019

They finished seventh out of eight but on the same points as rock bottom Royal Challengers Bangalore, winning just five out of 13 completed games. Four different players got past 300 runs, which was a good effort from the batters.

But they lacked something with the ball most of the time and the departures of Buttler and Stokes, who reported for international duty, deprived them of their two most likely match-winners at the back-end of the Group Stages.

It was good to have Steve Smith back after his one-year ban but it was an all-too-familiar story when it came to results.

A crown representing the captain at RR

Captain: Sanju Samson

He’s been at the Royals for years so it was somewhat understandable that when the captaincy became vacant in 2021, he was asked to take over.

As will be the case with lots of IPL teams this year, having a skipper who knows the team well in a season full of change, will surely be a big asset.

He’ll also have a big job to play with the bat.

He’s a smart top-order batsman who can accumulate runs or go big, depending on the situation.

He’ll be desperate to score plenty of runs and give himself a chance of breaking into India’s World Cup squad.

A trophy representing the gun player for RR

Gun player: Jos Buttler

It was the Royals who experimented with opening with Buttler a few years back rather than playing him in the middle-order and it worked a treat. It makes sense for him to open.

As a wonderfully aggressive, resourceful and innovative batter, he should be facing as many balls as possible and have a chance to find his feet before teeing off. When in the mood, he’s pure dynamite.

Across 65 games in the IPL, his average is very good at 35 but his strike rate of 150 is even better.

What a difference it makes when he gets the team off to a flier and they’ll want more fast starts from him this season.

A medal representing the promising youngster at RR

Promising youngster: Riyan Parag

Parag holds the record for being the youngest player ever to score a fifty in the IPL, aged just 17.

Now 19, he’s played 30 matches in the IPL but hasn’t got to 50 in the past two seasons, which is a bit of a concern.

Given his promise and the fact he was bought back by the Royals this season, he absolutely must have a big season this campaign. Or you can see why the Royals may just be losing patience and faith in him.

He would do his own cause some good if he started playing a bigger role with the ball, having only ever taken six IPL wickets, despite being viewed as an all-rounder.

Rajasthan Royals Team Analysis

Their top order looks good with superstar overseas batsmen Buttler opening and Hetmyer at number five with the extremely capable Samson at three, and youngsters Jaiswal and Parag either side of Hetmyer.

The key will be for Devdutt Padikkal, a more conservative batsman, to play longer innings as an opener while the others take risks around him.

But Jaiswal and Parag really need to step up and assess the conditions and be able to work out what is needed, if this is all going to work. It’s time they went from talented youngsters to reliable IPL batsmen.

They also need to keep their pace bowlers (Nathan Coulter-Nile, Boult and Krishna) fit because there isn’t much cover for them. But if those three can have a good season, they’ll be just fine.

That’s because they have a big trump card in the form of spin twins Ashwin and Chahal.

It’s a big coup to have two world-class spinners in the team like that. They can either bowl in tandem or ask Ashwin to bowl in the Powerplay overs, which he’s done before.

If it all clicks, they have every chance of making the Playoffs, at least.

A tick to represent the strengths of Rajasthan Royals

Strengths

  • Top 3 of Padikkal, Buttler and Samson should be good for plenty of runs.
  • Spin duo of Ashwin and Chahal is world class.
  • Lots of six hitters in the side.

An X to represent the weaknesses of Rajasthan Royals

Weaknesses

  • Look a fast bowler light.
  • Very poor record in the IPL over the past few seasons.
  • Fielding might be a bit sloppy with Ashwin, Hetmyer etc in the side.

Rajasthan Royals FAQs

They’re the fifth favourites at 8.0. Rajasthan haven’t even made the final since the very first edition of the tournament, back in 2008.

Stokes wasn’t one of the three retained players from 2021 and then decided to not play in the IPL at all in 2022, preferring to focus on getting back to Test cricket. So they didn’t have the chance to buy him back in the Mega Auction.

The answer is yes. In the first edition of the IPL, Shane Warne led them to their one and only title by beating the Chennai Super Kings in a close final. Australian Shane Watson was named Player of the Series but a lot of credit goes to Warne for his excellent man-management and in-game tactics.

They’re up against SRH on March 29 at the MCA Stadium in Pune. It pits last year’s seventh-team place (Rajasthan) against the team who finished bottom (Sunrisers Hyderabad).
