Sunrisers Hyderabad Betting

The Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to win the 2016 IPL with a fine victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final.

They also made the final in 2018, losing to a fine CSK side where Shane Watson was superb in a well-timed chase, the Aussie scoring a brilliant century.

SRH have only been around since 2013 and made the Playoffs in six of their nine seasons to date, so have been pretty consistent.

But 2021 was a disaster of a season for them, they’ve said goodbye to stalwart David Warner since and a new era begins for them now with Kane Wiallimson as their permanent skipper.

Our top analysis for online cricket betting on SRH is up next! That includes analysis of their past results, a look at their squad, areas of strength and weakness and who their playing XI may be for most of the season.

Sunrisers Hyderabad best odds

If you’re interested in IPL online betting, most of the sites have the Sunrisers Hyderabad at 13.0 to win the IPL, making them the outsiders of the lot and even bigger odds than the two new teams: the Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow Super Giants.

But if you think SRH can defy expectations and go on to do what Rajasthan did in the inaugural season- win the IPL as rank outsiders- then you’re better off turning to Betway, who with odds of 17.0, are being far more generous than its competitors.

Either way, the bookies clearly don’t fancy SRH this season.

Whether it was the disastrous campaign they had last year, the loss of Rashid Khan in the off season, the decision to appoint Kane Williamson as skipper or the rest of the business they did in the Auction, they’re certainly not fancied to go well.

Let’s see whether all that is justified.

Has Sunrisers Hyderabad won the IPL before?

They won it in 2016 after finishing third in the Group Stages. Yeah, that means they had to do it the hard way. They set Kolkata Knight Riders 162 in the Eliminator which proved to be more than enough, winning by 22 runs. They followed that up with a hard-fought win against Gujarat Lions in the Qualifier 2.

Thanks to a well-judged chase of 163 that owed a lot to an excellent 93 not out from the bat of Warner. In the final, their hero came from a somewhat unlikely source, against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Ben Cutting, who tends to do really well in the Big Bash but has somewhat struggled in the IPL over the years, hit a crucial 39 off 15 batting first and then followed that up by taking two for 35 with the ball, in a man-of-the-match performance.

Warner scored a barely believable 848 runs during the tournament and Bhuvi Kumar and Mustafizur Rahman played their part as well with the ball, Kumar taking 23 wickets and the Bangladeshi claiming 17.

SRH performance 2021

SRH went into the 2021 season in good shape.

An opening partnership of David Warner and Jonny Bairstow was seen as among the most explosive in the competition, Rashid Khan was eyeing up a load of wickets once again and with Bhuvi Kumar back fit, they looked to have plenty of boxes ticked.

But Mitch Marsh pulled out before the season even began, Kane Williamson wasn’t fit for the first few matches and of the seven matches played in India before the IPL was suspended, they lost six of them, including going down in a Super Over against Delhi.

David Warner, short on runs and becoming increasingly frustrated with results, was sacked as captain and replaced by Williamson, with Warner also dropped in the process.

After the Covid-enforced break, Warner returned just for the UAE leg just as a player but was then dropped entirely after two more failures; Bairstow decided not to return and instead focus on preparing for the World Cup.

West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder then got a run in the side and was superb, making you wonder why he hadn’t played all along.

But it was all too little too late, they finished rock bottom with just three wins all season and Tom Moody and Brad Haddin left their jobs as Head Coach and Assistant Coach.

SRH performance 2020

It was a reasonable season for SRH last time out. They managed to finish the Group Stages in third place on 14 points thanks to a better net run rate than RCB (who made the Playoffs) and KKR (who didn’t), who also ended on 14.

They did well to beat RCB in the Eliminator in a low-scoring match and were just one game away from the final. But Delhi’s 189 proved a little too many for them despite a valiant effort in trying to chase that.

It was the usual story in terms of their star performers over the course of the season. Rashid Khan led the bowling charts with 20 wickets, while Warner top-scored with 548 runs. Interestingly, in the eight games they won, there were eight different SRH man-of-the-match winners.

SRH performance 2019

They crept into the Play-Offs in fourth place, only just pipping Kolkata and the Kings XI to the last qualifying slot on net run rate.

They then lost to Delhi Capitals in the Eliminator in an extremely tight game that saw the Capitals chase their 163 with just a ball to spare when eight wickets down.

Five different Hyderabad players got to 20 but none of them was able to kick on.

An explanation behind their defeat in that match is that Warner was unavailable as he prepared for the 2019  World Cup.

He’d been their star man with 692 runs, enough to make him the IPL’s top batsman for the season and they badly missed him when it mattered most.

A crown representing the captain at SRH

Captain: Kane Williamson

The decision to retain Williamson and give him the full-time captaincy may have surprised some. But it shouldn’t have.

Williamson is one of the game’s finest captains in any format, proof of which is how he got New Zealand to two World Cup finals in a row- the ODI one in 2019 and the T20 WC in 2021. As it happens, they lost both, but they defied the odds to even get that far.

With a good cricketing brain, excellent management skills and a fine feel for the game, he’s one of cricket’s skippers who can really make a difference.

As for his ability as a batsman, it’s often been said his scoring is too slow for T20. But the stats paint a very different picture.

His IPL strike rate across 63 matches is 131, which is pretty good indeed. And with 17 fifties across those games and an average of 40, he’s been one of the league’s most consistent batsmen for a while now.

A trophy representing the gun player for SRH

Gun Player: Nicholas Pooran

Readers of this site will already know what we think of Nicholas Pooran: he has the ability to be one of the world’s true great middle-order white-ball batsmen.

Anyone who’s ever watched him bat can see how hard he hits the ball but also just how well he times it. On his day, he’ll think nothing of striking at 200 and scoring a boundary just about any time he feels like it.

But he’s simply not consistent enough.

He needs to assess conditions and match situations better, realise that boundaries aren’t the only way to score runs and bide his time on occasion.

He’s fresh from a good T20 and ODI series against India in February and let’s see if this is the season he’s finally at his best in the IPL.

Given he’ll also keep wicket for SRH and you can see what a big role he has to play.

A medal representing the promising youngster at SRH

Promising Youngster: Umran Malik

It’s hard to believe that a player with just three First Class games to his name and only eight games of professional T20 on his CV was a retained player for an IPL team.

But he was.

First noticed as a net bowler for SRH in 2021, he finally made his debut as a Covid replacement that year and caught many people’s attention when he bowled five balls in a row at above 150 kmph, against RCB.

It was enough to convince the SRH management that at 22, he was very much the future of the franchise and they decided to retain him.

We know he’s lightning quick but whether his line and length is good enough for the IPL, whether he can develop some variations as well as take plenty of wickets, remains to be seen.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Team Analysis

The first point to make, from a betting point of view at least, is that SRH probably shouldn’t be such big outsiders.

If we forget last season’s debacle for a minute, their squad doesn’t look that much weaker than some others.

If they go with Williamson, Markram and Pooran at 2, 3 and 4, that’s a good-looking top order right there.

Add youngsters Washington Sundar and Marco Jansen to the equation- the next big things for India and South Africa respectively, who bat in addition to just bow- and the highly experienced Bhuvi Kumar, and you can see that there’s plenty to like. Especially if speedster Malik gets going.

But it might all come down to Williamson. For starters there’s no guarantee he’ll be fit for the whole season after persistent elbow injuries have kept him out of playing for New Zealand. There isn’t an obvious man to take over as skipper for them if he’s not available, unless it’s Windies vice-captain Pooran.

But if Williamson does play, leads the team well and scores plenty of runs at the top of the order, they may surprise quite a few people.

  • Impossible to replace Rashid Khan.

Sunrisers Hyderabad FAQs

After several seasons at SRH, Khan was meant to be one of their retained players in late 2021. But apparently there was a dispute about which place he’d be retained in, SRH wanted Kane Williamson to be their first retained player and Khan decided to not be retained because of the difference it would bring to his salary. So he was eventually bought by the Gujarat Titans.

Possibly. They look like a decent side on paper and should be pretty competitive in 2022.

Because they’re the betting outsiders from among all the IPL teams, you’ll get big odds on them making the final, whether they win it or not.

West Indies keeper-batsman Nicholas Pooran was bought for 10.75 Crore in the 2022 Mega Auction. That makes him the most expensive signing, though it cost SRH 14 Crore to retain Kane Williamson.

Their first game of the season is against the Rajasthan Royals on March 29 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune. It’s a game between the team finishing bottom in 2021 (SRH) and the one who finished seventh (the Royals).
