South Africa vs Bangladesh Betting Odds

I’m about to give you the reasoning behind our cricket predictions and why I’m keeping faith with Bangladesh at big odds to win the decider. It would be just their second ever win in an ODI match in South Africa against South Africa and their first-ever ODI series win here.

I’ll talk you through the reasons as to why the Tigers have a better chance than their odds suggest.

And of course, there’s the usual toss prediction for you, as well.

South Africa vs Bangladesh Betting Tips & Predictions - T20 World Cup

South Africa’s Recent Form

After their shock loss in the First ODI, there was a lot to be pleased about in the Second.

There was Kagiso Rabada taking five wickets in a man-of-the-match display that saw him bowl unchanged for seven overs at the start of the innings, something you very rarely see outside Test cricket.

There was Lungi Ngidi bowling his 10 overs for just 34 runs and taking one wicket in the process.

And then there was Quinton de Kock feeling like SA’s best gameplan to chase those runs was to be aggressive from the start, which is exactly what he did, his 62 off 41 looking more like a T20 innings.

When he got out, Kyle Verreynne (58) and Tamba Bavuma (37) completed the job with minimum fuss but by then, de Kock had done all the hard work.

But among all those positives, the two spinners weren’t so good. Tabraiz Shamsi was economical enough but claimed just one of the nine wickets to have fallen.

Which was still better than Keshav Maharaj, who conceded 57 without taking a wicket.

Team News

It was interesting that de Kock’s return on Sunday led to Aiden Markram being dropped rather than Verreynne.

Verreynne had stepped in to open for de Kock and many would have thought that with the first-choice keeper coming back, the back-up one would move aside. But not so.

Verreynne scored a fine 58 to go with 21 in the first game and is now averaging 45 in ODIs so Markram will have to work hard to get his place back.

Wayne Parnell was bowling well until he got injured, meaning Bavuma (who had never bowled in an ODI before) had to complete most of his overs for him. That Bavuma’s six overs went for just 3.56 an over was a pretty good effort from the skipper.

Parnell will be replaced by one of Marco Jansen, Dwayne Pretorius or Andile Phehlukwayo.

Unless they drop one of the spinners, meaning it’s two from those three.

Player to Watch: Temba Bavuma

In many ways, Bavuma is a limited-overs player who would have been happier if he were playing 15 or 20 years ago.

An extremely small man, what he lacks in power he makes up for with good shot placement, hard running and a fine awareness of where the field is. That he’s hit just five sixes in his 18 ODIs to date, tells its own story.

But a player like him certainly has a role to play in any team at number three, anchoring the innings. Any team can do with a man who averages 48 in this format.

It all means he’s best suited to playing in slightly lower scoring games than ones where he’s expected to strike well above 100.

We’ll have to wait and see whether this wicket plays to his strengths but he’s 6.45 with 10 CRIC to top score for his side here.

And here’s our 10CRIC review, where we analyse all aspects of one of India’s favourite betting sites.

South Africa’s Likely XI

Verreynne, Malan, Bavuma, Verreynne, van der Dussen, Miller, Jansen, Rabada, Maharaj, Shamsi, Ngidi.

Bangladesh’s Recent Form

It would have been practically impossible to have kept up the same standards from the first game given it was one of the best Bangladesh performances in an ODI in recent times.

But still. They will have been disappointed with a batting effort where no-one in the Top 5 scored more than 15.

In the end it was left to numbers 6 and 7 to get to something respectable, albeit a total at least 40 runs or so short of the par score.

The out-of-form Mahmudullah scratched his way to 25, while Afif Hossain hit a superb 72.

With the ball, Shakib and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were both really good but the others not so much and by then, the damage had been done.

Team News

It always seems to be about Shakib. This time, several of his family members have been taken ill for different reasons and he was given the option to return home.

But he’s decided to stay and will play in the Third ODI, though he’ll almost certainly fly home after it. Whether that means he’ll miss the Test series starting next week, remains to be seen.

Mahmudullah has been struggling, not getting to 30 in any of his last eight games for Bangladesh. And he hasn’t bowled much, either. Though to be fair, he’s bowled pretty well when given the chance.

But they’re unlikely to drop such an experienced player ahead of a game like this, meaning they’ll almost certainly play the same XI again.

Player to Watch: Mehidi Hasan Miraz

Mehidy is only 24 and after Shakib has called it a day, will surely be the closest to being his successor, even though that’s almost an impossible task.

His right arm off-break has seen him average over a wicket a game in his 57 ODI matches and his economy rate of 4.48 is very respectable.

And just recently, he’s also been in the runs. A month ago he scored a superb 81 not out in an ODI against Afghanistan and chipped in with a good 38 on Sunday.

If only Bangladesh had a few more players of his quality. And he’s only going to get better.

Bangladesh’s Likely XI

Tamim Iqbal, Litton Das, Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Yasir Ali, Mahmudullah, Afif Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman.

Venue & conditions

We’re back at Centurion after the Second ODI was played at Johannesburg.

A reminder that this is where Bangladesh posted 314 batting first, which ended up being more than enough. For a good stat: in the last 12 times the team batting first has scored over 300 runs at Centurion, they went on to win 10 of them.

And that’s precisely what Bangladesh will try to do.

Bat first, play it safe at the start and then look to accelerate in the middle-overs and get to that magical mark of 300.

Skipper Tamim Iqbal said as much:

“If we can handle the first ten overs well, [and] if we don’t give them too many wickets, we can definitely score runs against them in the middle overs.”

It will be interesting to see what SA will choose to do if they win the toss but in a decider, they too may want to bat first.

The weather is fine with no rain forecast.

South Africa vs Bangladesh Head-to-Head

This is one of the more one-sided contests in ODIs on the South Africa v Bangladesh head-to-head, from among the Test-playing nations. In 23 matches between the two, Bangladesh have won just five.

But interestingly, Bangladesh won two of the last three games between the two. Bangladesh have only ever won one ODI played on South African soil.

South Africa vs Bangladesh Toss Prediction

Let’s look at the South Africa v Bangladesh toss winner statistics.

Given a coin toss is the ultimate example of a 50/50 chance and it’s remarkable that SA have won 69.57% of tosses between them over the years.

Bangladesh did win it on Sunday (though it didn’t do them much good) but with the Proteas’ record at the toss, it’s worth going with Bavuma to come good this time.

Recommended Bet: Back Bangladesh to win @ 4.7 with Pure Win

Ahead of the First ODI, Bangladesh were 4.9. I backed them and they won.

Ahead of the Second ODI, they had been cut to 4.1. I backed them and they lost.

So irrespective of what happens here, we’re going to end the Series with a very decent profit.

But what’s the move this time? It’s Bangladesh, who are 4.7.

Everything went right for SA at the weekend with the Tigers’ top order getting out to some poor shots and Rabada bowling out of his skin. They almost needn’t have bothered going through the motions of SA chasing a sub-200 total. (I’m joking, of course.)

But everyone is allowed a bad day at the office and the tourists can fight back here.

It’s obvious that they’d love to bat first, get to 300 and then let scoreboard pressure get the better of SA, much like it did in the first match.

So it will be hard work if SA bat first and get to 300. Bangladesh’s race may just be run if that happens. The stats say so.

But at the odds in question, it’s certainly worth going with them and hope they can win the toss, bat first and put on a good total in the first innings runs market.
